Before opening his Muay Thai NYC Camp, Coban was a 5-Time World Champion fighter. Below you'll find videos of Coban in competition. Some of these videos you won't find anywhere else on the internet! Relive these classic fights.
Coban: "This fight was a set up. They cheated every step. I was alone in France. Songchai didn't come with me. I was supposed to fight Didat!! In the morning of the fight, I took my weight with Didat. But in the evening when I got on the ring, Ramon Dekker was there! I was confused and mad. I step on the ring already. I don't walk away from a fight. That guy in black t-shirt in my corner? He is not my team. He is one of the promoter's worker! Even in motel, I had nothing to eat! I don't know how to order food. I was by myself in motel with no money and drink only water until after take weight. They cheated me. But I fight anyway."
Coban was erroneously referred to as Cobal! Ooops.
Coban: This fight was in France. So funny, my promoter make me dance before fight, but, damn, song was too long! And my corner told me to do fancy kicks. I think I did too much! Later they told me, "enough fancy kicks!"
Q: Coban, you fought anyone anywhere. Were you ever afraid to get in the ring?
A: No, never. Actually, I was afraid in my first fight.
Q: How old were you?
A: Eleven. My gloves were huge. My shorts down to my knee! (LOL!) And my belly was huge! I was so nervous, and shaking. I couldn't hear anything. So loud and so bright!
Q: Why was your belly huge?
A: I had worms! We were poor, and no money for medicine. My first manager gave me medicine; after that no more worms.
Q: Do you miss fighting?
A: No. LOL Training is hard. But when I was young, I was fast with my combination. I am old now. I wish I could be back to my old shape.
Q: Who is your favorite boxer?
A: Marvin Hagler. I used to watch his fights to learn how to box. New fighters, I like Pacquiao.
Q: Who is your favorite MMA fighter?
A: Anderson Silva. I like George St. Pierre too.
Q: How has Muay Thai changed since your fighting days?
A: We had more fun in my time. We did everything: knees, elbows, punch, kick, clinch. Now, gamblers control too much.
Q: Can you explain what you mean?
A: I was in Thailand in February 2010, in Lumpinee, fighters clinch all the time because gamblers like clinching. More points.
Q: Do you miss Thailand?
A: A lot! I want to go back everyday. But I like NYC now. I'm used to it.
Q: In the Hector Pena fight, Pena was mocking you during your Wai Kru and first round. Did you see that? If so, did that make you mad?
A: Yes, I saw that. No, it not make me mad. But I say: Ok, that's it. No problem. First round, I watch his style. I never saw him fight before. During break, Songchai my promoter said: Stop playing, next round, time to go home. So second round, I fight. I trained hard for this fight. My first fight in U.S. I trained at Mungsurin Camp. Mike Miles was there too.
Q: Coban, what is your motto, your philosophy in life and Muay Thai?
A: Be strong, be a real fighter, don't be afraid, and never give up in the ring and in life. Be honest, do the right thing in life and in the ring. Most important: Don't talk too much. Don't be a smart-ass!(LOL)
Q: When was the "Cruncher" picture taken? The one taken outdoors behind the trees?
A: Oh. That one was around 1991. It was for a tournament. We fight all over Thailand like a tournament. I came in second place. I lost to a fighter I knocked out many times before. I don't know why I was so tired. I cannot punch, my body so weak. Later I find out the trainer put medicine in my water to make me tired. He did same thing to someone else later. He get caught, and they fired him out.
Q: Coban, you were also known as "Buffalo Head." How did that come about?
A: (LOL) Ramon Dekker gave me nickname "Buffalo Head" because I have a hard head. But actually, I had 9 buffaloes in Thailand. I take care of them since I was 7 years old. They slept under our stick house. (LOL) I take good care. They loved me a lot. I came back from training in Bangkok, and they all gone. My father sold them because he had no money. I was so sad.
Q: Who is your favorite actor?
A: Charles Bronson. He not talk too much. He just shoot fast. LOL
